The Freebirds Wrestling Club is a
community-based club which offers a place for participants of all ages to
develop their skills in the sport of wrestling using four basic styles. The
styles offered by our club are: Folkstyle, Freestyle, Greco-Roman and
Grappling. Folkstyle is the style of wrestling similar to the rules of High
School and College wrestling. Freestyle and Greco-Roman are the styles used in
international competition such as in the Olympics and World Cup competitions.
Grappling is similar to Judo or a mixed martial arts but no punches are
allowed. The Freebirds Wrestling Club is open to participants of all ages. It is a club
sanctioned by and affiliated with
USA Wrestling and
California USA Wrestling. CA-USAW and
USAW sanction tournaments, clinics and events throughout the state and nation
in the various styles of competition. USA Wrestling is
also the National Governing Body for the Sport of Wrestling in the United States and, as such, is its representative to the United States Olympic Committee. Simply, USA Wrestling is the central organization that coordinates amateur wrestling programs in the nation and works to create interest and participation in these programs. The many programs and activities conducted by USA Wrestling or the hundreds of chartered clubs, provide opportunities for youth and adults alike to gain an understanding and appreciation for the
various styles of wrestling.
All wrestlers must hold a current USA Wrestling Competitor card and have it with them in order to compete
or practice. Additionally, they must also have a copy of their birth certificate or official identification with
birth date in order to register at state and most local tournaments. To get a
USA Wrestling card a wrestler must pay $40 for the card
and it can only be purchased online. Wrestlers are expected to provide their own transportation to and from events (see
tournament schedule). Club members are not required to attend the practice sessions in order to compete in tournaments; although
attendance at each practice session is
highly recommended. Finally, wrestlers must have a "permission to participate" form signed by their parents
on file in order to participate. Membership in the Freebirds Wrestling Club costs $100 per person. This fee covers
spirit wear, entry to five local tournaments for one class and our club
charter membership fee. Funding is also provided to coaches for travel and
reimbursement of costs incurred at tournaments which is provide for by the
club membership fee.
